How Odisha FC was formed?
Other than Hyderabad FC, the team from Odisha called Odisha FC is one of the two new entrants in this season of ISL, as they took place of the now-defunct team Delhi Dynamos.
The owner of Delhi Dynamos, GMS Inc., had to re-brand the team and move their base from Delhi to Bhubaneswar. As per the proposal with the Odisha state government, Delhi Dynamos was renamed as Odisha FC. The reason behind the shifting of Delhi Dynamos was to cut down the financial losses as in the last season the average attendance was mere 9,000 in the stands where the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium has the capacity to accommodate 60,000 fans at a go.
On 31st August 2019, it was officially announced that Delhi Dynamos would be rebranded as Odisha FC as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Delhi Soccer Private Limited and the Government of Odisha, and had to shift home base from the national capital New Delhi to Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Furthur in the MoU it was stated both the bodies mutually decided that the club’s youth teams, youth football development program, first team, and grassroots football development program will be based in Odisha.
2019-20 Debut Season
Odisha FC retained the head coach of Delhi Dynamos Josep Gombau as their head coach for the season. Josep is a former youth coach of FC Barcelona and has also held many positions in their academy. He joined Delhi Dynamos as their head coach on April 1st, 2018, and is also going to continue to be in the same position for Odisha FC too.
However, Odisha FC’s core team has some resemblance to last year’s Delhi Dynamo and the Spanish manager who is the first manager in the club’s history to survive more than a season at the franchise. While building the team Gomabu managed to pull out the loopholes and built a strong team for the season.
The start of the season did not go as expected by Odisha FC, as they lost their first two matches against Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United FC by the narrow margin of 2-1 in both the games.
In the match against Jamshedpur, Aridane Santana became the first goal scorer for the Odisha State franchise as he scored an equalizer in the 40th minute but the winning goal by Sergio Castel of Jamshedpur FC in the 85th minute secured the win for Jamshedpur.
The first win for Odisha FC came in their third match where they traveled Mumbai to face Mumbai City FC and defeated the hosts by 4-2. In that match, goals from Xisco Hernandez and Jerry Mawihmingthanga in the 6th & 40th minute respectively, and a brace by Aridane Santana on the 21st & 72nd minute gave Odisha FC a comfortable lead and an easy victory against Mumbai City FC.
After defeating Mumbai City FC, Odisha FC had a good run for the next three matches as they didn’t lose any of them but it came to an end when they faced Bengaluru FC on matchday 7 where they again lost by a narrow margin to 1-0. The goal from Juanan of Bengaluru FC in the 37th minute was the only difference that made Odisha FC lose the game.
As the season continues, with 2 wins and 3 draws from the 8 matches played Odisha FC right now stands on the sixth position in the table.
