Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the current goalkeeper in the Indian National team. Known for his lightning speed on the field while saving goals Gurpreet has managed to save 88% of the goals of the opposite team and is one of the top goalkeepers that the Indian National football team had.

Gurpreet Singh is also the first Indian player to play in Europe’s topmost football championship and is the fifth in the line for playing professional football in Europe after Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri, and Subrata Pal. He is also the first Indian to play in UEFA Europa League. So, let us know more about this very famous goalkeeper of the Indian National football team.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Early Life and Club Career

He was born on 3rd February 1992 at Chamkaur Sahib, Mohali, Punjab. At the tender age of 8, he took up the game of football and started his training at St. Stephens Academy in 2000 and soon got selected for the U-16 Punjab team. His youth state-level debut was from Haldwani in 2006. Then in 2009, he went on to play the National level tournament Hero I-league from East Bengal side. In 2010 he signed an official contract with East Bengal and appeared for the team 5 times during his 2009-2010 season. In 2010-2011 he was loaned to Indian Arrows in the quest for regular game time but ended the season without any caps for the team.

The 2011-2012 season with East Bengal FC started as a second choice goalkeeper for the 2011 Federation cup. But, soon after the Federation Cup, he became the first-choice goalkeeper for the team. He made his debut with the first game of 2011-2012 I-league match against Churchill brothers.

On 15th August 2014, he signed a contract with Norwegian club Staebaek. He made his debut for the club on 18th January 2015 in a friendly match against Follo. He made his League debut in May 2016 in a match against I K Start. On 30 June 2016, he became the first Indian to play for UEFA Europa League. He appeared in the first leg of the Staebaek’s first qualifying round matches. He played for half an hour before being replaced. 

Bengaluru FC

In 2017 Gurpreet came back to India and joined Bengaluru FC. He made his debut for the team against April 25 sports club in the AFC Cup championship knock out round and his I-league debut was against Mumbai City FC. In 2018 Sandhu extended his contract with Bengaluru FC until 2023.

International Career

He made his debut for the International Football in India U-19 against Iran U-19 in the 2010 AFC Cup Championship. The qualifying rounds were played in November 2009. He was then selected for the international team for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. He made his debut against Turkmenistan. The FIFA world cup qualifier squad against Nepal also had him, but, was unused in both the legs. He made his second international appearance against Iran in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers.

In 2015 the Indian National team played against Guam and due to his brilliant goalkeeping won the match by 1-0. He maintained the same form against Sri Lanka in the 2015 SAFF cup championship. In 2016 he captained the Indian National team against Peurto Rico and played a very important defensive role. He also captained the team against Kyrgyzstan in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification in the year 2017.

For 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the year 2019 he made his 35th appearance for the team against Oman on 5th September 2019. He was not able to save 2 goals and Hence, India was defeated. But, in the next game against he played one of his best defensive games leading his team to a draw by 0-0 against Qatar. Gurpreet saved 20 shots in this game.
