The UEFA European Football Championship that is going to be held in 2020 is most commonly known as EURO 2020 or UEFA EURO 2020. The European Football Championship is one of the top class football tournaments in the world. It is organized by the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and is the quadrennial men’s football tournament of Europe. EURO 2020 is the 16th UEFA European Championship. The tournament will be hosted in many cities of the world from 12 June to 12 July 2020. So, let us know more in detail about the EURO 2020.

EURO 2020 Qualification

In this tournament, there is no automatic qualification for the final rounds. In order to qualify all the 55 member teams, including the 12 countries who are hosting the round matches must compete to qualify for the final 24 places in the final tournament. The UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying draw was held on 2nd December 2018 and the main qualifying rounds started in March 2019 instead of September 2018 following the FIFA World Cup and the process ended in November 2019.

The UEFA Nations League was established in 2018 and is going to be linked with UEFA European Championship 2020 in order to provide a second chance to the countries to qualify for the EURO 2020. The qualifying matches for the UEFA Nations League are to be held in March 2020.

EURO 2020 Qualified Teams

Of the current 20 teams that have qualified for the tournament 17 are the returning teams from the year 2016. Here is the list of teams that have qualified for the tournament. Seven teams from the twelve host countries qualified for the tournament.  Four teams will enter the play-offs with a maximum of three that will be able to qualify and the go-ahead for the tournament. Azerbaijan was completely eliminated after the qualifying rounds.

EURO 2020 Venues

The UEFA decided that instead of one host city, this time the EURO 2020 matches will be played in multiple cities around Europe and that the host cities will be selected by the bidding process. The process officially began on 21st March 2012 with the intent of announcing the hosts by 2013 or early 2014 so that the countries get enough time to prepare UEFA certified stadiums. EURO 2020 Criteria for Host Team Selection

The following criteria were applied for the qualification of host teams.

  • When both host teams qualify for the play-off rounds, then a draw will determine which team will host all three group stage matches at home.
  • From the two teams if one host team qualifies directly and the other host team advances to the play-off rounds then the qualified host team will host three group stage matches at home and the other team if qualifies will host two group matches at home.
  • If one host team advances to the playoffs and the other team gets eliminated, the team that qualified for the playoff will get to play all three group matches at home if they qualify further.
  • If both the teams get disqualified, no action is needed.
