Dempo Sports Club Goa (Dempo SC) History
Dempo Sports Club started as the Bicholim football club which was a classic and first division football club in the 1960s in the country. The Dempo squad at that time consisted of the following players Subhash Sinnari, Bernard Olivera, Tolentino Serraro, Bhaskar, Kalidas Gaad, Manohar Pednekar, Bhai Pednekar, Ganpat Gaoncar, and Pandurang Gaoncar. The Bicholim sports Club was then bought by Michael De Souza and Hence it was renamed as Dempo Souza football club. Later on, Vasantrao S Dempo from the Dempo corporation purchased Michael De Souza’s stakes in the football club and it was renamed as the Dempo Sports Club or Dempo SC. Dempo Sports Club is located in Panjim, Goa.
Dempo Sports Club Goa Other Facts
The Dempo Sports Club logo includes a golden bird in the middle, with the name Dempo Sports club and the name of the state that it belongs to i.e. Goa. The Dempo sports club’s official colors have always been blue and white. The home colors always had blue colored shirts and the shorts were either blue or black. The away colors were always all white.
But, in 2011 the new away kit had shirts with black stripes on it. Dempo Sports Clubs home stadium in Fatorda Stadium in Margao, Goa. The Stadium was opened for public in the year 1989 and since then Dempo SC has used it as their home stadium. The main sponsor and the owner of the club is the Dempo mining corporation. It has owned the club for a very long time.

Dempo Sports Club Goa Journey
In the course of time, the Dempo sports club Goa has won the innumerable number of awards and tournaments through decades. So, let us have a look at the journey of the team decade wise.
After the club was purchased in 1967, in their inaugural tournament in 1969, the team finished as runners up in the Goa Premier League just behind Vasco football club.
Dempo SC won its first title by defeating Salgaocar FC in the Goa Premier League in 1971-1972. In 1975 Dempo sports club defeated the TATA sports club by 1-0 and won the Rovers Cup. This was there first National level win. They lost the Nizam Gold Cup for three consecutive seasons of 1972, 1973 and 1974, but, broke the taboo and won the tournament in 1978 by defeating the Customs and Central Excise team. In 1978 Dempo won the Rovers Cup again by defeating Orkay Mills FC and again defended the title in 1979 against JCT Mills.
This era is considered a golden era in the history of the Dempo Sports Club, as they won all the matches consecutively. In 1982 the club won the Bandodkar trophy by beating Salgaocar FC by 3-0. In 1983 they successfully defended the trophy and became the winners again and for the third and fourth time in 1984 and 1986. Dempo then won the Rovers Cup in 1986 by defeating Mohun Bagan.
Dempo defeated New Radiant FC by 5-4 in Male in January 1991 and won their first International tournament. They again defeated Mohun Bagan by 2-0 and won the Rover’s Cup in the same year. The club reached the final of the 1996 Federation Cup but did not win it. In 1996 they became one of the first twelve teams to play in the inaugural season of National Football League and finished at the top of Group B. However in 1999 they finished last in the tournament and were thrown out.
In 2004 Dempo Sports Club got the entry back into the NFL tournament and won the tournament. They also won the prestigious Federation Cup in the same year and won the 2006 Durand Cup. They also win the NFL tournament in the year 2007, which was the last year of the tournament. After which Hero I-league took its place. Dempo Sports Club won the inaugural tournament of the I-League in the year 2007-2008, due to which they were able to participate in the 2008 AFC Cup.
They reached semifinals in this tournament after defeating Singapore side Home United FC by 4-3. Dempo also participated in the 2009 AFC Challenge Cup but lost against Sharjah by 3-0 in the qualifying rounds. They won the 2009-2010 I-League championship by defeating Churchill Brothers, Mohun Bagan AC, and Mumbai FC and won the tournament.
They again won the I-League tournament in 2011-2012 they won the I-League tournament. After the 2012-2013 season, they parted ways with their most successful football coach Armando Colaco. With him, they won 5 leagues.
