Climax Lawrence’s Early life & Football Coaching
Climax Lawrence was born in Goa and had an interest in football from a very young age. Actually, football was in his genes. His father and uncle were very good football players playing the game with the local clubs. They used to take him to the matches with them when he was just 3 to 4 years old. Slowly and gradually, he also started developing an interest in the game. He joined Salcete FC football camp for the kids and got selected to play for the U-14 team by the local coach Mickdom Rebello. But, he never thought to take up football as a professional career. Lawrence won a couple of Goa football association age group championships and went on to represent Goa in the U-19 championships. He also got a chance to represent Salcete FC in Goa professional League football.
Club Career of Climax Lawrence
Climax Lawrence first played for a football club Vasco FC for a one year tenure in 1998. Then he joined the Salgaocar FC team in 1999. Before joining Salgaocar Climax Lawrence used to play as a striker. It was only after he joined the Salgaocar FC team that he was offered a position as a midfielder in the game, which changed the course of his football career.
His best performance at the Salgaocar FC was in 2002-2003 when he helped the team finish runners up in NFL, and won the Goa League and Rovers cup titles. With the help of Climax Lawrence as a midfielder, the Salgaocar team went on to win various titles like National Football League, Super Cup, Rovers Cup, and Durand Cup titles.
In 2004, after the end of his tenure with Salgaocar FC, he went on to join the East Bengal FC club. He remained with the East Bengal team for just about a year, but, said that playing for a Kolkata based team is really tough not because of tough competition, but, because of the fan following and the sentiments of the public that are attached to their favorite club. But, still, he managed to win three trophies during the year. These trophies were the Kolkata League, Durand Cup and San Miguel International Cup, Nepal. After his stint with East Bengal Club was over he wanted to remain with the club, but, the management did not want to do so and hence he accepted the decent offer by Dempo FC in the year 2005.
In 2005 he helped the Dempo FC team win their first NFL title and was instrumental in the Goan team winning Santosh trophy. He won the best midfielder award in the National Leagues. The midfielder helped Dempo FC to win a plethora of titles. These titles include the following trophies two NFL trophies, 3 Hero I-League titles, 5 Goa League titles and won the Durand Cup in 2006 and Super Cup in 2008 and 2010. His stint with Dempo FC ended in the year 2013 and he signed a contract with Mumbai FC for another two years.
After completing the contract with Mumbai FC he returned back to Kolkata and signed a contract with Atletico De Kolkata, which won the inaugural ISL season in 2014. But, Lawrence was left out of the game for most of the season because of a previous injury and was out of the limelight. After he returned, the club already had a set team and this mark the end of Lawrence’s club football career.
Climax Lawrence International Career
In 2002 Stephen Constantine, the coach of the Indian National team selected him for the Indian National Football team. After completion of the training camp, he was selected in the final squad and traveled to Bangladesh for the 2003 SAFF Cup. His International Debut match was the 2003 SAFF cup match against Afghanistan, the team won this match with the help of one goal from Climax Lawrence in the 91st minute, but, did not fare very well in the game and finished third in the tournament after losing against Bangladesh.
On 24th August 2004, he helped the Indian team win the friendly match against Vietnam, on their own home grounds by 2-1. In the 2005 SAFF Cup, he scored a goal against Bangladesh. This match ended in 1-1 draw. He scored one more goal against Afghanistan in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup at Hyderabad, India. This was probably the last International match that he played. He announced his retirement after that.
