The AFC 2020 U-23 Men’s Championship will be the 4th edition of the age-restricted tournament and will act as a qualifying championship for Men’s Football at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The tournament will start from 8th to 26th January 2020 in Thailand. Japan is the host nation and so the national team has already qualified for the Men’s football at the 2020 Summer Olympics, but as per the rules if Japan reaches the semi-finals of AFC U-23 Men’s Championship then the team opposite Japan will automatically qualify for the Summer Olympics. So, let us know more about the 2020 AFC U-23 Men’s Championship.

Host Selection and Venues

Many countries expressed a keen interest in hosting the 2020 AFC U-23 Men’s Championship including Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Of course, this is a prestigious tournament and a matter of pride for a country because it is also the qualifying tournament for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The AFC’s Competition Committee’s meeting was held at Tokyo in August 2018 and Thailand was selected as the host.

Four Venues are decided for the Championship to be held these venues are

  • Bangkok
  • Songkhla
  • Pathum Thani
  • Buriram

Rajmangala Stadium, Bangkok

Rajamangala Stadium is the National Stadium of Thailand and is located in the Hua Mak Sports Complex. It is home to the Thailand National Football team and was inaugurated in the year 1998. The seating capacity of the stadium is 49,722. The 1998 Asian games were the debut tournament at this Stadium. After this, many International football tournaments including the 2007 AFC Asian Cup is played at this stadium. Faculty of Architecture designed this stadium and was made of Concrete. As a result of which, though the structure of the stadium is impressive, it can never be considered as beautiful.

Tinsulanon Stadium, Songkhla

It is a multipurpose Stadium in Songkhla. The Stadium is named after their ex-prime minister, Prem Tinsulanonda. The stadium was built in 1995 and has a capacity of 45,000 people. The football semi-finals of 1998 Asian Games were hosted at this Stadium.

Thammasat Stadium, Pathum Thani

This stadium is located in the city of Rangsit, Pathum Thani, Thailand. The stadium was opened for the public in the year 1998 and was used for the first time for the 1998 Asian Games. The appearance of the Stadium is like a smaller version of Rajamangala Stadium. The seating capacity of the stadium is just 25,000 people. The main thing about the view of this stadium is its floodlights. While looking from the outside it seems like the Pylons are gripping the outside of the stadium and then leaning forward to enlighten the entire area. The stadium is home to Bangkok United F. C.

Buriram Stadium, Buriram

This stadium is also known as Chang Arena, due to sponsorship reasons. It has a seating capacity of 32,600 and is home to Buriram United F. C. The stadium has also received the nickname of Thunder Castle. It is the largest club-owned football stadium in Thailand. The stadium was opened for the public on 4th June 2011. Quite a few numbers of International football matches have also been hosted at this stadium.
