The 2020 AFC Women qualifiers is the 5th edition of the AFC tournament, which determines the top women’s football teams that can qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The competition is organized by the Asian Football Confederation. The top two teams will get to participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics along with Japan. Japan has already qualified and is not participating in the further qualifying rounds. So, let us know more about the qualification process, venues and other things about this tournament.
2020 AFC Women Qualifiers Format
The format for the AFC Women’s Qualifying matches for the Olympics is very different as compared to men’s tournaments. Out of 47 AFC members, 25 countries participated in this tournament. This tournament is divided into four rounds. The selection process for the teams is also based on the June 2018 FIFA Women’s world ranking.
- Second round
- Third round
- Playoff round
Based on the June 2018 FIFA Women’s World rankings the top 5 teams Australia, North Korea, China, South Korea, and Thailand are directly promoted to the third round. The other top-ranking teams Vietnam and Uzbekistan received direct entry to the second round. The remaining teams were divided into two groups of five teams and two groups of four teams each. The first round was held from 4th November 2018-13th November 2018.

Ranking of third-placed teams
Due to some groups having a different number of teams after the withdrawal of other teams. The results for the fourth and fifth-placed teams are not considered.

For the second round, twelve teams were divided into three groups. Each group consisting of four teams. The second round was played between 3rd to 9th April 2019. In this round, the winners from each group proceeded to the final round.

The play-off round is scheduled for 6 March 2020 and 11 March 2020. The two winners from the play-off round will qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics, other than Japan. The matches will be played in between winners of Group A and Group B and runners up of group A and group B.

As mentioned above, the venues that are decided for the third round of selection are as follows

- Five rings sports center, Wuhan
- Tazihu sports center, Wuhan
Jeju Football Stadium, Jeju
This football stadium has a seating capacity of about 35,567 people. It is located in the city of Seogwipo in Jeju province of South Korea. The stadium was opened for the public in the year 2001. The top of the stadium is in the form of a traditional fisherman’s boat. The stadium has hosted many matches of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and also a few matches of the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Five Rings Sports Center, Wuhan
This sports center is located in the Dongxhiu district, Wuhan, Hubei, China. The sports complex has a seating capacity of 30,000 people. It broke the ground in April 2017 and now is open for the public in the year 2019.
Tazihu Sports Center, Wuhan
As of now, not much information is available about this stadium.
